Reproduction Frequently Asked Questions
Health Testing
We Recommend that each breeder seeks out recommendations for their selected breed in regards to health testing. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) offers a list of diseases and conditions that you can consider to test.
Brucellosis
Canine Brucellosis is a contagious bacterial infection, it primarily affects the reproductive system, but it can also impact other organs and can be spread to humans. Dogs can get it by contact with bodily fluids(Vaginal discharge, semen, urine, blood, saliva, ect.).
Progesterone Timing
Is a blood test used to determine the best time to breed a bitch which would be off of ovulation date. As soon as you see your bitch in season please call to schedule the first progesterone within the first 5 days of her cycle.
Artificial Breeding we offer
Vaginal Artificial Insemination (AI): This procedure can be performed using fresh or fresh extended semen. This procedure is performed using a syringe and pipette to deposit semen into the vaginal canal, similar to natural breeding.
Transcervical Insemination (TCI): This procedure can be performed using fresh, fresh-extended and Frozen. This procedure is performed using a fiber optic scope that is passed up into the vagina, a small catheter is then inserted through the cervix and semen is deposited directly into the uterus. This procedure is done while the patient is awake.
Surgical Insemination: This procedure can be performed using fresh, fresh-extended, and frozen semen. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia.
What can I feed my bitch during pregnancy?
We recommend feeding a quality dog food (Purina Pro Plan, Victor, NextLevel, Fromm, Royal Canin, ect.) with NO peas or soy. Once confirmed pregnant add extra protein like scrambled eggs, meat, no dairy or calcium. Once it's closer to whelping date do smaller meals throughout the day.
We recommend still feeding added protein and also add dairy and calcium supplement after birth, to help produce more milk.
What is a temperature drop?
A normal temperature for a dog is 100- 102.5. When your bitch is closer to her due date we recommend taking temperatures at least twice daily, 98-97 is considered a temperature drop. Within 12 hours of a temp drop they will usually go into whelp.
What are signs of a difficult birth and when should I call my vet?
Any green discharge before or during whelping, greater than 2 hours between puppies, if she keeps pushing for a long period of time and nothing is coming out (the puppy may be stuck) and Signs that mom is in significant distress – pale (gums are white or gray in color), unable to get up, etc
Why should I choose to do an Elective C-Section?
Some breeders choose this option to reduce risk to the mother and puppies, some breeds are predisposed to difficult natural delivery common breeds are (English Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Pugs, Chihuahuas, Mastiffs, ect.), doing a C- Section results in a higher puppy survival rate, less trauma during delivery. If puppies are to large compared to bitch, only 1 puppy or 10 or more we usually recommend a C- Section.
What is required for a collection and or Semen Freeze
At JPH we require a teaser bitch that is in heat for any collections, up to date on Rabies. scheduling a few weeks ahead of time is appreciated.
For freezing upon scheduling an appointment you will receive a contract that needs to be filled out prior to appointment. It will include a list of health testing/documentation that AKC requires in order to use the semen.
